책판 제작의 사회·문화적 의의 ―19세기~20세기 초 영남 지방의 문집 간행 사례를 중심으로

Abstract

For publishment of a book, the making of printing plate is likely to be regarded as a mere technical process in comparison with the conspicuous material reality of a book itself. It is still true that the circulation and reading of a book is the way of realization of its cultural potential, but the discussing and making of printing plate is also marks the cultural-social competence of the author and publishers. The arguing, funding and printing is a substantial basis to produce a book as seen through the cases of late 19th and early 20th century Youngnam province, and the cultural network and influence is to be activated through such a process. It was a great cultural practice to make printing plates and publish books. The problematic existence of that practice is intensified when the temporalspatial distance of the author and publishes is enlarged. Publisher, who are usually the followers or descendents of the author, tried to prove the author's and their own cultural authority at the same time, and the making of printing plates in itself has a essential significance under those cultural conventions.
