Abstract

As part of the efforts to comprehensives review the books prints housed in the Korea Studies Advancement Center(韓國國學振興院) in Andong, Gyeongbuk Province, this study set out to investigate the characteristics of books prints including Genealogical tables(族譜類), Confucian classics(經書類), Dongmongseos(童蒙書類), Jijis(地誌類), Gasas(歌辭類), and journals(日記類) in terms of nature and publication. Book prints were the basic tool to print books, which were almost the only medium for knowledge distribution in the traditional society. Understanding the backgrounds and publication processes of book prints will be meaningful in that it can shed light on the traditional printing culture related to printed books. To examine the current state of the book prints, the investigator looked into their nature and value by considering the engraving, sages' writings, and publication by the cases. After checking certain book prints and their printed books, the investigator examined the list of the book prints and found out some of their histories at the center. Some remaining old documents were consulted to understand the publication background of the book prints and provided new and useful information about the overall processes of rough copies including making and proofreading in addition to the making and publication of the book prints. The 50 kinds of book prints housed in the Korea Studies Advancement Center were made and kept in Gyeongbuk Province including Andong and have direct and indirect relations with the Yeongnam school, whichsucceeded the heritage of Toigye, in terms of author, editor, and publisher. Those findings prove that the book prints fully reflect the local thoughts, culture, history, and academic traditions.
