초록

완벽주의는 영재성의 발달과 밀접한 관련이 있는 정의적 특성 중의 하나로 간주되어 왔다(Dabrowski, 1972; Silverman, 1999). 초등학생과 중학생을 대상으로 한 영재의 완벽주의 성향에 관한 대부분의 선행연구는 영재와 일반 학생이 완벽주의의 특정한 차원에서 어느 정도 의미 있는 차이를 보이는 것으로 보고하고 있다. 그러나 고등학생의 경우에도 영재와 일반학생의 완벽주의 성향에 유의미한 차이가 있는지를 살펴본 연구는 드물다. 또한, 기존의 선행연구는 완벽주의의 일부 차원만을 고려한 경우가 많고, 완벽주의의 다차원적인 속성을 포괄적으로 고려한 경우는 드물다. 이러한 점을 고려할 때 완벽주의의 다양한 차원에 있어, 고등학생의 경우 영재학생과 일반학생의 완벽주의 성향에 차이가 있는지를 살펴보는 연구는 영재와 일반학생의 완벽주의의 발달양상에 대한 보다 깊은 이해에 도움을 줄 것이다. 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 설정한 본 연구의 목적은 고등학교 영재학생과 일반학생의 완벽주의 성향을 다양한 차원에서 비교하는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 Frost 외(1990)의 다차원적 완벽주의 척도, Hewitt와 Flett(1991)의 다차원적 완벽주의 척도, Rhéaume 외(1995)의 완벽주의 질문지를 사용하여 고등학교 영재학생과 일반학생의 완벽주의 성향을 비교하였다. 선행 연구의 결과와는 대조적으로 본 연구에 참여한 고등학교 영재학생과 일반학생은 완벽주의 성향의 측정에 사용한 세 검사의 총점 및 각 검사의 하위 요인 모두에서 통계적으로 유의미한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 본 논문의 주요 결과와 선행연구의 결과를 바탕으로 영재의 완벽주의 특성의 발달에 관한 논의 사항을 제시하였다.

Abstract

Perfectionism has been considered an affective characteristic, which is closely linked to the development of giftedness (Dabrowski, 1972; Silverman, 1999). Past researches on gifted students' perfectionism during their elementary/middle school years report that gifted and average students are different in certain aspects of perfectionism to some degrees. However, there is a lack of research investigating the differences of gifted and average students' perfectionism in their high-school years. In addition, prior studies rarely consider the multidimensional properties of perfectionism, while focusing only on its certain dimensions. Considering these limitations, there is a call for a study that investigates the gifted and average high-school students' perfectionism by using diverse conceptualizations and measurements of perfectionism. The purpose of the present study, based on these rationales, is to compare gifted and average high-school students' perfectionism in the various aspects of perfectionism. For this, the current study used Frost et al.'s (1990) MPS (Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale), Hewitt & Flett's (1991) MPS (Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, and Rhéaume et al.'s (1995) PQ (Perfectionism Questionnaire). The results showed that there is no significant differences in gifted and average high-school students' perfectionism as measured by the two MPS and PQ. Based on the results of the current and the past studies, several issues on the gifted students' development of perfectionism were discussed.
