Abstract

The purpose of the current meta-analysis was to synthesize the results of past studies in which the differences in perfectionisms of Korean gifted- and average-students were compared. For this purpose, the mean-effects sizes were calculated and tested separately from the fifteen prior studies for the three dimensions of self-oriented, other-oriented and socially-prescribed perfectionisms as proposed by Hewitt & Flett(1991). In addition, sub-group analyses were conducted to find out whether each of the three mean-effect sizes does significantly differ, depending upon the grade-levels of the participating students in the individual studies. The results of the meta-analyses revealed that self-oriented has the largest and statistically significant mean-effect size among the three dimensions of perfectionism. On the other hand, the results of the subgroup analyses indicated that the mean effect sizes were significantly different only for the case of socially-prescribed perfectionism. Based on the major findings of the meta-analysis, the characteristics and development of Korean gifted students’ perfectionism were discussed, and the future research directions were suggested.
