Abstract

This study investigated counselors’ perceptions of chatbots that provide psychological counseling services via text or voice using AI(Aritificial Intelligence) by applying an exploratory design method of mixed research. In-depth interviews with six counselors were first conducted, and the collected qualitative data were used to create an online questionnaire, and the created questionnaire surveyed on 226 counselors and the data were analyzed. The perceptions of counselors regarding chatbot’s advantages, disadvantages, functions, the appropriate clients for its use, the possibility of its use during face-to-face counseling, its potential impact on existing counseling sites, and safety and ethical considerations were derived. Counselors’ acceptance of the chatbot was ’moderate.’ Counselors were more concerned about the chatbot’s disadvantages over its advantages. However, the functions provided by chatbots were considered appropriate overall, and the possibility of using a chatbot in the counseling scene was positively recognized. This is the first study in Korea to examine counselors’ perceptions of chatbots, and it is meaningful that it suggested that the counselors and psychological counseling chatbot can maintain a complementary relationship.
