Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore what pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) elements horseback riding instructors teach learners in the field. To this end, in-depth interviews, participant observation, and text analysis were conducted with three horseback riding instructors with more than 10 years of instructor experience, and the results are as follows. First, knowledge of the educational goals of horseback riding is to experience the value of horseback riding and riding for competitions. Second, knowledge of horseback riding education content is to create a balanced stance and ride while understanding the horse. Third, knowledge of horseback riding teaching methods is to provide level-specific & customized education and safety. Considered guidance, creating a fun class atmosphere. Fourth, knowledge of horseback riding evaluation includes the riding ability certification system and participation in competitions. Fifth, students' knowledge of horseback riding includes individual instructions, demonstrations, and various guidelines. Sixth, knowledge of the horseback riding education environment includes comfortable facilities and relaxation. and provision of waiting space and appropriate prices. It was found that the formation of equestrian pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) was achieved through, first, learning experiences as an equestrian athlete, second, self-directed learning, and third, forming a community with surrounding leaders. We hope that this study will provide experiential knowledge in forming the pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) elements of horseback riding instructors in the future, and if the overall teaching methods of horseback riding instructors are improved, it will be able to contribute to revitalizing the horse industry, which is the original purpose of horseback riding.
