초록
The responsive strategies of university students and middle- aged groups of Korean and Japanese citizens, when complimented on their ability by close friends, were surveyed. A contrastive analysis adhering to a sociolinguistic viewpoint was then applied to the results. A brief summary follows. First, upon hearing a compliment on their ability from close friends, Koreans responded with acceptance (51.6%), denial (36.1%), or deflection (9.9%), in said order. The Japanese responded with denial (51.4%), acceptance (34.6%), or deflection (10.5%). This is significant in that the difference in general linguistic behavior between the Japanese and Koreans reveals that a self-centered behavior pattern and a counterpart-centered behavior pattern are applied when responding to a compliment. A difference between Japanese and Korean speakers is that Koreans do not demonstrate significant differences in their responsive strategy according to age. However, Japanese middle-age groups showed consistently higher ratios of rejection than Japanese university students, so some generational differences were identified.
