Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate how the aspects of Incheon were embodied in video, especially in movies and dramas, and what meanings it had in such videos to be created as cultural content. Incheon follows Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, and Busan in terms of population with 2.8 million residents. It has grown into one of the pivotal cities in South Korea in many different areas including the size of economy as a metropolis. Moreover, it was an entrance to modern culture historically and holds huge significance in modern society as a new place for opening through the Incheon International Airport and Songdo New Town. In spite of those aspects, however, Incheon leaves some regrets because it has no clear images or seems to have only narrow impressions. Although it boasts remarkable self-sustaining capabilities, it is regarded as a bed town of Seoul. It has also been fixed as a sign of alienated consciousness as in the old professional baseball team, Sammi Superstars, and the movie Take Care of My Cat with its images remaining at the fragmentary level. Entering the middle 2000s, however, its images started to change a little bit. It exerted its abilities as a hub of East Asia with the stable establishment of the Incheon International Airport. Its Songdo New Town also emerged as a new landmark. As a result, Incheon began to have dynamic images little by little. Furthermore, it appeared as the place of cultural content in movies and dramas, riding on the Korean Wave. There are more and more places of productive memory in Incheon. In that sense, the present study examined how the aspects of Incheon were embodied in video, especially in movies and dramas, and what productive meanings it had to be represented as the place of memory or cultural content.
