Abstract

Microelectromechanical system (MEMS) switches control electrical signals through mechanical contact, enablingnearly zero leakage current and extremely low power consumption. In addition, owing to their electrostatic actuationmechanism, MEMS switches are inherently insensitive to charge-trapping effects even under extreme environmentssuch as high temperature, cryogenic temperature, radiation, shock, and vibration. Consequently, MEMS deviceshave attracted considerable attention as promising candidates for next-generation space electronics. However,radiation-induced damage acts as one of the main factors degrading device performance in space environments,so it is essential to evaluate the radiation tolerance of the constituent materials of the MEMS device. In this study, structural and chemical changes of molybdenum and platinum thin films, which are commonly employed asstructural and contact materials in MEMS switches, respectively ─ were investigated before and after 100 MeVhigh-energy proton irradiation. These findings provide fundamental insights for ensuring radiation reliability andestablishing material design guidelines for MEMS devices intended for extreme environmental applications.
