Abstract
This study seeks to continue the second part of the serial investigation entitled “A Trajectory of Ancient Jewish Christianity in Light of the Interactions between Paul and the ‘Pillar’ Apostles”, with a particular attention to the way in which the same interaction was further developed by their followers throughout the 2nd and the 3rd century. Such a mutual competition in a variety of theological and political confrontations is somewhat implicitly reflected in the mirror of church fathers’ writings at that time indirectly with a rather critical condemnation over against the Jewish Christian sects like the Ebionites and Nazoreans, or explicitly detected in the writings of Jewish Christian groups which accepted conservatively and appropriated rigorously the theological legacy of the 1st century pillar apostles. Of these, I select two major documents for the purpose of a critical analysis: i.e. Didascalia Apostolorum and the Pseudo-Clementine literature. In the final analysis, it becomes apparent that the inclusive universalism of the Pauline Christianity and and the sectarian particularism of the Jewish Christianity are set in a sharp contrast especially on the point of how to respond to, and interpret the Jewish legalistic tradition of Torah, while they are intermingled and even deeply conflated with each other in the common goal of the regional faith community in some other respects. This shows how the diverse theological streams following a particular leadership turn out to be deployed in a different spectrum of political struggles for hegemony. In turn, it is undeniable that the combats for political hegemony have reinvigorated their theological convictions on each side. Simultaneously the long process of claiming for the theological orthodoxy in the early Christian history confirms the fact that the inclusive universalism wins the final victory in the Pauline Christianity. Nevertheless that did not eliminate completely the authentic value of the sectarian particularism on the part of the Jewish Christian groups which inherited the theological legacy of the ‘pillar’ apostles.
