Abstract

When Paul opposed Peter to his face in Antioch, the believers of the Church of Antioch took side with Peter. After suffering a severe defeat, Paul left the Church of Antioch and built independent churches around the Aegean Sea. It is very important in understanding the development of Early Christianity to know whether the reconciliation between Peter and Paul occurred or not. This paper tries to examine the relationship between Peter and Paul after ‘Antioch’ by studying the writings which were made by the later followers of the two apostles. While the community of Paul produced several writings including the Gospel of Luke, Acts and the Pastoral Epistles in the late first century and early second century, the community of Peter produced 1, 2 Peter and Pseudo-Clementine. The writings of the followers of Paul showed consistently amicable attitudes toward Peter and tried to strengthen the authority of Peter. There are not any negative mentions of Peter in them. This implies that Paul continued to regard Peter as his comrade or taught consistently the necessity of reconciliation. The writings of the followers of Peter showed different attitudes toward Paul. While 1Peter and 2Peter showed anamicable attitude and tried to defend Paul, the Pseudo-Clementine literature showed ahostile attitude and even criticized Paul severely. I think the reason why the later followers of Peter had these controversial attitudes is that Peter had showed anequivocal attitude toward Paul. Probably Peter taught that the thought of Paul was fundamentally right but too ideal to practice in actuality.
