Abstract

This study compares Akira Kurosawa’s Ran and Zhang Yimou’s Curse of the Golden Flower, focusing on the portrayal of female antagonists and use of visual expressions. Both Kaede in Ran and the Empress in Curse of the Golden Flower are depicted as strategic figures who resist feudal power structures and achieve their aims through manipulation and intrigue. Kaede embodies the mythical image of a fox spirit. Her role is visually emphasized by frequently using long shots that express shifts in character dynamics and tension through spatial composition and framing. In contrast, the Empress is portrayed through frequent close-ups that reveal her inner conflict while she actively seizes control and initiates political rebellion. By comparing these films to their literary sources, Shakespeare’s King Lear and Cao Yu’s Thunderstorm, this study highlights the originality and cultural reinterpretations of these characters. By analyzing visual techniques and cultural symbolism, this study underscores the diversity of female representations and the significance of creative reinvention in cinema.
