Abstract

The massive arrival of sardine along the East Coast of the Korean Peninsula in the late 1920s sparked several literary responses. Sardine fishing and manufacturing industry led to the perception of the sea as a space where primitive accumulation was realized. Consequently, the lives of the people by the sea began to be represented from political and economic perspectives. Two "maritime literature" pieces published in 1930 present a conflicting narrative: a class-conscious perspective that sought to project collective action against the state and capital, versus a disregard for the sea itself—the main subject matter—and the coastal populace. To render collective action inevitable, they tended to erase the unpredictable ecological characteristics of the sea and the concrete lives of the coastal community. The scenes of omission, rupture, and closure found in this "maritime literature" are symptomatic of the suppression that occurs when political conscientization is set as the sole end, exposing the paradox of a proclaimed realist narrative being alienated from the concrete realities of life. In contrast, the novels of Hyeon Gyeong-jun demonstrate a distinct approach. While incorporating a class-conflict structure, his narratives connect the masses’ uprising with catalysts peculiar to the fishing village, such as adultery or private revenge, or conserve the private desires of the village’s fallen intellectual, thereby suspending a clear social prognosis. Furthermore, he provided a view of the sea’s ecological and economic conditions. By placing the floating male maritime laborers and a woman who wanders through the village bars on parallel tracks, he suggested that the bodies of the colonized people, drifting between the sea and land, were a structural outcome produced by maritime capitalism. The series of "maritime literature" inspired by the sardine rush presents an intriguing case, demonstrating both the potential and the limitations of the realist narrative form against the backdrop of the sea, which had previously been marginalized in the representational sphere.
