Abstract

In this study, we investigated the neural bases of generating visual mental images in science using fMRI. There were 11 science and engineering undergraduate student participants, all of whom received good grades in biology class. In the visual mental imagery task, participants were asked to complete the dotted line through generating mental images. In the control task, participants were asked to follow the line of the figure by eye. The visual mental imagery task produced greater brain activation than the control task in areas of the right prefrontal cortex (PFC; BA 47), bilateral PFC (BA 9, 10), premotor (BA 6) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC; BA 32), cerebellum, brain stem, and so forth. The activation of the right PFC was more significant than that of the left PFC. These results suggest that the process of generating visual mental images in science is involved in the bilateral brain hemisphere, with the right prefrontal cortex playing a pivotal role. These results could provide the brain scientific basis for the teaching and learning method through generating visual mental images in science class.
