Abstract
We investigated the neural bases of generating analogies in science. Participants consisted of 11 science and engineering undergraduate students. They good grade in biology class and in science. fMRI data were acquired while performed analogy and reading tasks. Brain areas which higher activation levels analogy tasks reading tasks were analyzed using one-sample t test. nalogy tasks produced greater activation in the left prefrontal cortex (PFC; BA 46, 44, 9, 6), left temporal (BA 39) and parietal cortex (BA 40), and bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC; BA 24, 32). The left PFC integra and select information by reasoning and working memory, left temporal and parietal cortex stor and retriev, and ACC is executive control to maintain strategic search and selection. Thus, our results suggest that the processes of generating analogies involves successful executive attention, memory retrieval, relational integration, and selection.
