Abstract

(Background and Purpose) The global economic growth and the competitive landscape of industries are becoming increasingly fierce, regardless of geographical boundaries. Behind this development and civilization, environmental issues have become a task that nations and corporations worldwide are facing for future generations. Each country and corporation is recognizing and practicing sustainability through social responsibility, presenting a vision for the future through regeneration, sustainability, and a green environment as their management vision. In this study, we established a direction from the perspective of positive psychological effects and influences on the provision of green infrastructure to modern society and individuals. (Method) According to the societal trend, we apply the characteristics and specific elements of biophilic design, a fundamental methodology of green infrastructure, to public spaces directly related to the modern lifestyle of individuals as social contribution activities. We understand biophilic design based on the theory of biophilia and theoretically examine the elements and expressive characteristics of biophilic design. The resulting expressive characteristics are further categorized into types of spatial design. We analyze six spaces of various corporations as case studies of complex cultural spaces. (Results) In this study, we derived three types of design from biophilic design. First, there is a direct experiential design where the environmental materials, such as the system of the natural environment or material ecological elements, and nature-friendly experiences appear as experiential mediators. Second, there is a metaphorical aesthetic design where the visual aesthetics and cognitive attractiveness shown in patterns and organic forms in the ecological environment appear indirectly. Third, there is a spatial relationship design where the characteristics of psychological comfort and attachment provided by places such as sanctuaries and shelters, as well as cultural symbolism, appear as spatial connections. Through the analysis of the characteristics of biophilic design, we were able to confirm the complementary and interrelated results between users and corporations as observed in the target cases. (Conclusions) The landscape planning and natural elements present in public spaces within modern urban areas indirectly signify that nature is not a separate entity but rather interconnected and intertwined with human beings in their lives. It reflects the biological inclination of humans who prefer nature and serves as elements that alleviate and fulfill humans' psychological needs in urban environments. The incorporation of nature into the interior spaces of corporate complex cultural spaces, operated by modern corporations, is directly linked to enhancing the brand image associated with being nature-friendly, environmentally friendly, or a green corporation, thereby increasing their value. Therefore, through the medium of nature, we aim to discover the values and significance of sustainability in all spaces surrounding everyday life.
