Abstract

This paper aims to introduce the performance criticism to the New Testament readers in Korea. Our previous interpretations have been done on the basi s of how to read the text, but this new method encourages readers to concern themselves with how to perform the text. In consideration of the or- al culture in the first century C.E., the performance criticism intends to un - derstand how each text of the New Testament was performed in a given his - torial context to the certain group of audience by a performer and re- construct the meaning of the text by performing the given text for the con- temporary audience. As for a case study, this paper applies the performance criticism to the confession of the centurion (Mark 16:8) to find or confirm a meaning of the confession. In conclusion, the confession could be performed as contempt or as confidence. His confession as contempt is also coherent with the theo- logical intention of Mark (the motif of misunderstanding), the contents sur- rounding the confession, the consideration of the centurion’s political back - ground, the Roman empire (divi filius), and the open ending (Mark 16.8). The performance criticism helps readers to realize the following significance. 1) this criticism shares the contributions made by the hitherto developed methodologies in consideration of the context, the text and the reader. 2) the text is not interpreted with only one meaning, but experienced in various ways in accordance with performers, situations and audience. 3) the interpretation of each text needs to be experienced as a contexualized incident. 4) the interpretation of the New Testament was a communal experi- ence from the beginning.
