Abstract
This study introduces theEarly‑Stage Delinquency Rate (EDR)as a real-time risk monitoring indicator for revolving credit products, which lack fixed maturity. Unlike traditional 30- or 90-day past-due rates that reflect risk after delinquency occurs, EDR is observable at the point of delinquency initiation, offering stronger predictive power for expected credit loss (ECL) and annual charge-off rates. Using monthly account data from Samsung Card (Sep.2003 – Mar.2005), the study confirms EDR’s robustness, with R²=0.869 (single month) and R²=0.928 (3-month average) against projected loss rates. It also formalizes the structural links among EDR, intrinsic loss rate, and turnover, showing that reduced billing ratios can artificially extend portfolio duration and distort risk indicators. The proposed framework includes: (1) amulti-dimensional KPI model(EDR, billing ratio, turnover), (2)proactive response toolssuch as limit reduction and installment conversion, and (3)stress-testing principlesbased on the 2003 Korean credit card crisis. It further cautions that relief programs may lower EDR temporarily while masking long-term losses through extended duration, highlighting the need to balance liquidity support and moral hazard. Overall, this study advances a shift towardproactive, EDR-based credit risk management, enhancing capital adequacy and systemic stability for institutions managing revolving credit portfolios.
