Abstract

The purpose of this article is to clarify the idea expressed in Aristotle’s ethical writings that ‘exercising the virtue (areté) is pleasurable.’ To this end, I focus on the case of courage (andreia) in Book 3, Chapters 6-9 of Nicomachean Ethics, which is a prime example of where the connection between virtue and pleasure appears to be the weakest. Despite the inherent difficulties of the case of courage, I argue that Aristotle’s courageous agent derives a specific pleasure from courageous actions. Firstly, I introduce the issue of courage and pleasure, and review some preceding studies on this topic. I demonstrate why an alternative interpretation is needed, due to the weaknesses in these studies. Then, by analyzing the passages related to the concept of nobility (kalon) that Aristotelian courageous agent aims for as an end, as explained in Book 3 of Nicomachean Ethics, I clearly reveal the altruistic character inherent in nobility and courage. Subsequently, I directly link the altruistic character of nobility and courage to pleasure. I argue that the pleasure enjoyed by the courageous agent is a proper pleasure with the specific content, e.g., ‘hope for the well-being of others.’ Furthermore, I justify my interpretation by demonstrating that the specific pleasure experienced by courageous agent, as reconstructed in this article, conforms well to with Aristotle’s conception of pleasure as ‘the perfection of activity.’ Finally, this article seeks to illuminate the specificity of Aristotle’s views on the relationship between virtue and pleasure, and to offer an interpretation that clarifies the crucial yet often neglected altruistic character in courage as a Aristotelian virtue.
