Abstract
This study empirically examined the relationships between relative exploration orientation and firm performance, based on the longitudinal analysis of 80 small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) in the Korean electronic parts industry during the period of 1995-2004. Relative exploration orientation is the amount of exploration divided by the sum of exploration and exploitation. The dependent variables includes sales growth rate and return on sales(ROS), and their time intervals cover from year t, in which exploitation and exploration occur, to three year after year t (i.e. t+3). The results of multiple regression analyses revealed that (1) relative exploration orientation has an U-shaped relationship with sales growth rate in year t, and a reversed U-shaped relationship with sales growth rate in year t+3. It has no relationships with sales growth rates in other years. (2) it has no relationships with ROS in any years. Implications of the research findings are discussed. Based on the limitations of this study, recommendation for future research are provided.
