초록
This study examines the necessity and significant challenges involved in digitizing critical source materials on ancient Chinese novels produced by Joseon literati. While the digitization of these critical materials is essential for preserving advancing scholarly research, not all digital methodologies are suitable for this complex task. The importance of a humanities-centered approach is emphasized in addressing issues such as accurately representing classical language and contextual nuances that traditional methods may overlook. By refining data and ensuring transparency for collective verification, researchers can achieve more precise and meaningful outcomes. Key questions arise in the digitization process regarding the use of quantitative research methods, the necessity of coding, and the selection of appropriate research methodologies. The study also explores the need for data sharing, the potentials and pitfalls of generative AI, and strategies to address hallucinations in large language models, especially when applied to classical textual criticism. These considerations are crucial in determining the balance between the ‘digital’ and ‘humanities’ aspects in digitization efforts. The paper calls for strengthened digital humanities education and collaboration between scholars and technical experts, with humanities scholars maintaining oversight to ensure the integrity of research. By focusing on these elements, the digitization of critical materials on ancient Chinese novels by Joseon literati can evolve into a discipline that produces high-quality, meaningful academic research while preserving invaluable literary heritage, transcending the notion of being merely a novel technological endeavor.
