Abstract

This study, recognizing society’s inadequate ethical response to others’ suffering, suggests that the key to solving this lies in an empathic attitude, which is about attuning to others’ pain, understanding it, and striving to free them. Treating empathy as a teachable competency, the study adopts Zaki’s dynamic empathy's conception, and proposes a nonfiction–fiction integrated reading program for cultivating Cognitive Empathy, Emotional Empathy, and Empathic Concern. The program pairs a nonfiction work on social responsibilities with nine short stories portraying sufferings of people with disabilities, migrants and working women, sexual and gender minorities, disaster survivors, laid-off workers’ families, and people living with HIV. Per to the program, students complete reading logs, worksheets, discussions, and essays. The analysis results show that the students gained cognitive understanding, affective empathy, ethical sensitivity to difference, and reflexive awareness and value realignment. Learning to respond to others’ suffering is hard, yet the shifts observed among students in this class suggest that with proper education, society can be a kinder, more compassionate one.
