Abstract

This study analyzes the oral histories of mixed-race persons born in the 1950s and 1960s who migrated to the United States between the 1950s and 1970s. Focusing on their experiences of racial discrimination and bodily differences, the study examines the narratives of seven individuals. While their experiences and circumstances varied, they shared common concerns regarding racial discrimination and identity struggles in both Korea and the United States. This paper aims to make visible their experiences of discrimination while also paying close atten tion to the insights into the body that emerged through these experiences. In particular, it examines their racial performances through the concept of "becoming." "Becoming" serves as a meaningful analytical framework in minority history, as it dismantles the molar/majority and orients to ward the molecular/minority. Accordingly, this study highlights Amy’s processes of "becoming-Black," "becoming-Asian," and "becoming-Hapa," as well as Roy’s "becoming-Hispanic." The outcome of "becoming" is not the attainment of an "authentic" Black, Asian, or Hispanic identity. Rather than returning to an "original" form or acquiring molar majority status, "becoming" reveals "difference" and "ambiguity." These ambi guities function as the driving force for moving toward new territories, such as the identity of "Hapa." The practice of "becoming" presents the potential to transcend nationalism, racialism, and assimilationism by creating a space where such ideologies cannot take root.
