특수외국어교육진흥사업에서의 스와힐리어 학부 교육 내실화 과정 연구

특수외국어교육법과 연계된 교육 진흥 프로젝트가 진행되면서 동부 아프리카 지역전문가 육성을 위한 스와힐리어 교육이 한 단계 성장할 기회를 맞이했다. 특수외국어교육진흥사업의 중점 추진 전략은 학부 교육 내실화에 초점이 맞추어져 있다. 학부 교육 내실화가 선행되어야만 전문인력 양성이나 교육 저변 확대가 가능하기 때문이다. 본 연구의 목적은 특수외국어교육진흥사업의 지원으로 스와힐리어 학부 교육 내실화 과정이 어떻게 이루어졌는지 고찰하는 데 있다. 스와힐리어 학부 교육을 내실화하기 위한 첫걸음은 A1부터 B2등급까지의 표준교육과정 수립이다. 이 표준교육과정을 준거로 표준 교재 및 평가인증 문항 역시 등급별로 개발되었다. 스와힐리어 표준교육과정은 아프리카학부 동아프리카어과 전공 과정에 학기별로 반영되었고, A1과 A2등급의 표준 교재가 스와힐리어 교과목에 활용되고 있다. 향후 B1등급 이상의 스와힐리어 평가인증 점수는 동아프리카어과의 졸업 요건으로 적용될 것이다. 특수외국어교육진흥사업은 국내 스와힐리어 교육 여건을 개선하는 데 크게 기여하고 있다. 1단계 사업 기간에 학부 교육 내실화가 중점 추진 전략이었다면, 다음 단계의 사업에서는 이러한 전문화·체계화된 교육의 결과가 학문 후속 세대 양성 및 스와힐리어 교육 저변의 확대로 이어지도록 다양한 지원 프로그램이 시행되어야 할 것이다.
Abstract
The Act on the Promotion of Education of Critical Foreign Languages recognizes the importance of teaching various foreign languages which have been less commonly taught in Korea. The objective of this study is to examine implementation of the projects associated with the Act. It discusses effectiveness of the Act for teaching Swahili at the undergraduate level. The Division of African Studies at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies has been the sole educational institution in Korea that offers a major in the Swahili language. In order to strengthen teaching of Swahili at the undergraduate level, the division developed standardized curricula(A1, A2, B1, B2), customized textbooks(A1, A2) and reputable evaluation systems. Standardized curricula for Swahili that are optimized for Korean students can upgrade the quality of education at the division. Evaluation tests for Swahili at various levels will be used to assess students’ proficiency in the language. Once the development of standardized curricula is completed, customized textbooks will be written in accordance with the curricula. It is vital to maintain teaching of Swahili with consistency and long-term planning. The development of standardized curricula, customized textbooks and evaluation systems contributed to improving the quality of teaching Swahili at the division.
