6·25전쟁 시 미 해군의 역할과 주요 작전 분석

초록

이 글에서는 6·25전쟁 시기 미 해군이 전승에 기여하기 위해 어떠한 역할을 수행하였는가에 대해 분석하였다. 미 해군은 제2차 세계대전 이후 동원해제, 감군정책 그리고 국방예산의 감축 등으로 전투력이 급감하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 미 해군은6·25전쟁에서 다음과 같은 주요 작전을 수행하여 공산군의 공격을 격퇴하고 유엔군의 작전지속능력을 보장함으로써 전승 달성에 기여하였다. 첫째, 한반도 해상의 제해권 장악 및 해안봉쇄작전을 통해 북한해군과 지상작전 부대와의 협조체제와 작전지속능력을 붕괴시켰다. 둘째, ‘블루하츠작전(Operation Bluehearts)’, ‘크로마이트작전(Operation Chromite)’, ‘테일보드작전(Operation Tailboard)’ 등의 상륙작전을 통해 반격작전을 위한 유엔군 전력을 지상에 투사하였다. 셋째, 전쟁을 수행하기 위한 병력, 장비, 그리고 물자 등에 대한 해상수송작전 및 해상으로의 철수작전을 수행하였다. 넷째, 함포사격, 항모 함재기에 의한 지상군 근접항공지원, 주요 군사시설 및 전략자산에 대한 폭격 등을 통해 지상작전을 수행하기 위해 유리한 여건을 조성하였다. 다섯째, 동·서해안의 주요 항만 및 해역에 대한 기뢰제거작전을 수행하여해상교통로(SLOC)를 확보하였다. 연구결과를 통해 그동안 6·25전쟁 전사 연구에서 제대로 조명받지 못했던 한반도전구 내에서 미 해군의 다양한 역할을 재조명하였다. 미 해군이 수행했던 다양한 임무와 역할은 한반도 유사시 한국해군이 전구작전에 어떻게 기여할 수 있는가에 대한 이정표를 제시해 주고 있다.

Abstract

In this article, the role of the US Navy at the Korean War is examined. During the Korean War, the US Navy carried out five main operations to defeat the enemy. First, US Navy destroyed the cooperative system between the North Korean Navy and ground operation units through the sea control and coastal blockade operations. Second, US Navy projected the UN military forces into the land through Operation Bluehearts, Operation Chromite and Operation Tailboard. Third, US Navy carried out an operation to transport troops, equipment, and materials to perform the war, and withdrawal operation to the sea. Fourth, US Navy supported the ground operations through bombardment of aircraft, gunfire, and bombing of major military facilities and strategic assets. Fifth, US Navy performed a mine sweeping operations in the East and West sea to guarantee the amphibious operations, maneuverability of UN troops and to protect the sea lanes of communication.(SLOC) This article is tried to fully re-examine the US Navy's role during the Korean War which has been underestimated that compared to the ground battles. It is required that Korean Navy should study the US Navy's performances during the Korean War so as to cope with urgent situation properly.
