사진이 갖는 힘은 과거에 한 순간을 그대로 포착하여 그 순간을 영원히 유지하는 데 있다. 이는 기록사진이 갖는 고유한 특성으로서 역사적 자료로서의 가치와 함께 사건의 진실을 드러내는 데 결정적인 역할을 수행한다. 광주항쟁과 같은 갈등의 역사에서 진실규명은 그 무엇보다 중요한 과제였다. 특히 초기 5.18 유가족 및 시민단체들은 광주항쟁의 진실규명을 위해 모든 노력을 다했다. 이 과정에서 사진기록은 진실을 드러내는 데 결정적인 역할을 수행했다. 반면 모든 사진이 다 진실을 드러내는 것은 아니다. 사진은 파편적인 시간과 공간만을 재현하기 때문에한 사건의 전체적인 맥락을 담아낼 수는 없다. 일부 사진들은 광주 시민들이 조직한 시민군의 모습을 담고 있는데 이런 사진들은 ‘5.18’을 폭동이나 정치공작으로 왜곡하는 데 사용되기도 하였다. 여러 갈래로 주장되는 진실들 가운데 “진실”(the truth)은 어떻게 발견되는가? 사진은 파편화된 진실의 조각들 중에서 어떻게 “진실”을 드러내는가? 이 질문에 답하기 위하여 언론인의 ‘목격자역할’(bearing witness) 개념을 중심으로 진실을 드러내는 ‘증언’(witness)의 중요 성에 대하여 살펴보고자 한다. 이는 신학적으로도 중요한 의미를 가지는데, ‘다원주의 사회 속에서 여러 종교가 말하는 여러 진리들 가운데 기독교는 어떻게 진리를 드러낼 수 있는가?’라는 질문으로도 환원될 수 있기 때문이다. 이 글의 목적은 “목격자역할” 개념을 통하여 사진과 진실의 관계를 살피고 이를 통하여 디지털미디어 사회 속 교회의 증언의 의미에 대하여 논하는 데 있다.
Abstract
Photography has a unique characteristic that captures a moment in the past and freezes it forever. It plays a crucial role in revealing a truth of an event, along with its value as historical data. In the context of violent conflict such as the May 18, truth-seeking was most significant. In the process, photographic records played a critical role in witnessing the truth of the May 18. However, some photographs such as the images of militia were often used to distort the truth, insist- ing the May 18 as a riot. This is because a photograph cannot capture the overall context of an event and reproduce only fragmented time and space. How is “the truth” found among the truths claimed in many branches? How does a photograph reveal “the truth” among fragmented pieces of truth? This paper examines the importance of “witness,” maingly drawing upon the concept of “bearing wit- ness” and journalistic vocation in seeking truth. This argument is also theologically significant because it can be reverted to the question of “How can Christianity reveal the truth among the truths spoken by various religions in our plural society?” Within the stated context, this paper aims to examine the relationship between photography and truth through the concept of “witness” and to discuss the meaning of the testimony of the church in digital media society.
