본 연구는 폭력적 세계 속에서 평화와 화해를 이루기 위해 어떻게 과거의 악행을 기억해야 할지를 신학적으로 탐구하는 것을 목적으로한다. 구체적으로 이 논문에서는 진실하게, 책임 있게, 희망을 가지고 기억하기라는 세 범주를 통해 기억의 윤리적 지평을 살펴보았다. 첫 장에서는 기억을 억누르거나 왜곡하려는 유혹에 저항하면서 어떻게 비극적 과거를 ‘진실하게’ 기억할 수 있을지를 다루었다. 특별히 교회가 성서의 구원 이야기라는 틀 속에서 과거의 악행에 대한 기억을 공유하고 재해석하는 진실한 기억의 공동체가 되고 있음을 보여주었다. 두 번째 장에서는 폭력의 희생자들의 현존 앞에서 책임 있는 기억이 무엇인지 질문했다. 화해가 가능하려면 가해자의 죄책과희생자의 기억 모두를 정당하게 다뤄야 하기에, 현실적으로 완전한화해를 이루기는 어렵다. 하지만, 희생자의 기억에 우선성을 두고, 그들의 숨겨진 목소리를 복원하면, 화해의 길이 부분적으로나마 열릴 수 있다. 희망으로 기억하기에 관한 마지막 장은 그리스도의 십자가와 부활이 과거를 인지하는 우리의 습관적 시각을 전복하면서 현실을 변화시킬 가능성을 선사함을 보여줬다. 또한, 화해의 새로운 경험을 위해서는 종말론적 관점에서 기억과 망각의 변증법이 필요함을 제안하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to explore how the past can be remembered to promote peace and reconciliation. The first chapter on remembering truthfully focuses on how to remember the evil events of the past, resisting the temptation of distorting memories. In particular, this chapter examines the task of the church as a unique community of collective memory where the recollections of the tragic past can be shared and reinterpreted within the narrative structure of God’s salvation. The second chapter deals with the issue of remembering responsibly. It is crucial to do justice both to the victim’s memory and the perpetrator’s guilt in order to reconcile them. Giving priority to the memory of the victim, nonetheless, can bring a limited reconciliation here and now, restoring the victim's dignity, and affecting the perpetrator's attitude towards the past. The third chapter on remembering with hope explores a wider hermeneutical framework in which Christ’s cross and resurrection subvert our conventional perception of the past, creating a possibility of transforming the present reality. Moreover, this chapter demonstrates that the eschatological dialectic of remembering and forgetting can make the past a real resource for peace and reconciliation.
