Abstract
The seemingly anachronistic question, “What is photograph(y)?” recalls a long history of discourses that have defined, denied, and renewed the specificity of the medium. Within this lineage, it invites us to reconsider the contemporary condition of the photographic image. The “New Theory,” recently advanced by Anglo-American scholars, calls for a renewed theoretical framework capable of addressing the artistic and practical dimensions of contemporary photography. These theorists contend that the orthodox model dominating Western photographic discourse has collapsed the photographic event and the process of image formation into a single framework, thereby constraining the complex layers of production, representation, and reception that constitute photographic images. By examining the concept of indexicality and engaging with the frameworks of M. Dawn Wilson (née Phillips) and Diarmuid Costello, this study exposes fissures within the assumptions “photography = index” and “photograph = reality.” It argues that a photograph does not automatically record traces of reality but rather operates through multilayered mechanisms that separate the photographic event from the photographic image. By foregrounding the performative and processual dimensions of photographing, being photographed, and viewing, the paper suggests that the New Theory opens multiple pathways for interpreting the contemporary significance of photographic images.
