Abstract
This study re-examines Plato's critique of writing from the perspective of its foundation as a form of meta-media. Before embarking on this examination, which is approached from a media theory perspective, we first explore the debates surrounding Plato's philosophy, which serves as a preliminary historical examination of its direct and indirect connections to the critique of writing. After presenting the historical background of Greek media culture as a prerequisite for this analysis, we meticulously analyze the arguments against writing presented in the dialogue Phaedrus and the “Seventh Letter”. The mythological text of Phaedrus offers insights into the function of writing, and our analysis of the 'pharmakon' metaphor demonstrates that Plato's critique is fundamentally a critique of techne. Furthermore, we show that the argument put forth in the “Seventh Letter” within a historical context, as opposed to the mythological context of Phaedrus, is an extension of the critique of writing. The defense of the dialectic, presented in a condensed form in the letter, is revealed to be a defense of speech as the privileged medium for philosophical discourse.
