노자(老子)의 ‘몸’에 관한 연구 − 생명적 측면과 심신일원적(心身一元的) 특성을 중심으로 −

본 논문은 노자(老子)의 ‘몸’에 관한 사유를 생명적 측면과 심신일원적 특성을 중심으로 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해, 『도덕경(道德經)』에서 언급된 신(身)에 관련한 사유를 중심으로 논의를 진행한다. 동양에서 전통적으로 몸은 정신적인 것과 물리적인 것이 분리되지 않은 일원적 존재였다. 노자의 몸과 관련한 선행연구들을 보면, 대체로 『도덕경』의 신(身)을 물리적 측면과 정신적 측면이 분리되지 않은 하나인 일원적 존재로 간주하고 있다. 그러나 신(身)을 일원적 존재로 간주하면서도 신(身)의 정신적 부분을 우위에 두고 진행한 연구가 대세였다고 할 수 있는데, 이에 본 논문은 신(身)의 정신적 부분과 육체적 부분 중의 한쪽에 우위를 두지 않고, 심신이 하나인 일원적 생명체로 간주하여 연구를 진행한다. 본문에서 노자의 몸에 관한 사유는 ‘몸의 중요성’, ‘몸의 생명 순환적 특성’, ‘심신일원적 몸’의 세 가지의 측면에서 논의한다. 『도덕경』의 신(身)과 관련하여 나타난 몸의 ‘생명순환적 특성’과 ‘일원적 특성’은 『장자(莊子)』의 몸에 관한 사유와 연결된다고 볼 수 있다. 그러므로 『도덕경』에 나타난 몸에 관한 사유를 고찰하는 것은 장자(莊子, B.C.369?∼B.C.289?)와 도가철학이 추구하는 몸의 개념을 이해하는 중요한 단서가 될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine Laozi(老子)'s thoughts on ‘the body’, focusing on the vital aspect and the unitary characteristics of mind and body. In order to discuss this, this paper conducts the research centering on the thoughts related to the body in Tao-Te-Ching(道德經). In the preceding studies on the body of Tao-Te-Ching, most researchers generally regarded the body, Shēn(身), as a unitary existence in which the physical and mental aspects are one. However they considered Shēn(身) giving priority to the mental aspect of the body. This was the main stream to understand the Laozi's body in the past. Therefore this paper does not focus on the mental or the physical aspects of the body. Instead of that, it proceeds the research by considering Shēn(身) as a unitary living organism in which the two aspects are one. In this paper, Laozi's thoughts on the body is discussed in three aspects: ‘the importance of the body’, ‘the characteristics of life cycle of the body’ and ‘the mind-body unity’. It can be said that ‘the characteristics of life cycle’ and ‘the characteristics of mind-body unity’ of Shēn(身) in Tao-Te-Ching is related to the thoughts on the body in Zhuangzi. Therefore I believe that examining the thoughts on the body in Tao-Te-Ching can be an important clue to understand the philosophy on the body of Zhuangzi(莊子, B.C.369?∼B.C.289?) and Taoists.
