Abstract

This paper examined the meaning of Dao(道) and De(德) which is the art of living of ‘Wuweiziran(無爲自然)’ claimed by Lao-tzu focusing on Dao De Jing in the global pandemic of Covid-19. In terms of respect for life, Lao-tzu emphasized the world of nothing away from the Confucian form, courtesy and honor in Dao De Jing. Accordingly, the goal is to love oneself from axiological thinking to self-existential thinking and to live a life of doing one’s best by looking for freedom and contemplating life while one’s mind is empty for an independent life. According to Lao-tzu’s life philosophy, it is more rewarding to preserve life and do one’s best to be oneself than the importance of death. This means if there is life, there must be death, and humans do not dare to argue with heaven. In Lao-tzu’s Dao De Jing, the core reasons of life imply Youwuouxiangsheng(有無相生), Wuweiziran(無爲自然), and Daofaziran(道法自然), which consist of two systematic relationships between Dao(道) and De(德) that recognize everything. In other words, he not only emphasized an independent life, but also acknowledged the changes in the universe and accepted the diversity of life. Also, he represented the process of everything growing with the harmonious energy of yin(陰) and yang(陽). Therefore, with the idea of respecting life, freedom and happiness can be pursued in accordance with nature by emptying the human heart and strengthening it with a calm mind.
