Abstract
This study examines Ahn Eaktai’s perception of Manchukuo and his musical strategies of representation through an analysis of Manchurian Fantasy, premiered in Berlin in 1942. While previous scholarship has largely focused on whether Ahn’s activities should be characterized as pro-Japanese collaboration, this study turns to a close reading of the work’s structure, melodic and harmonic organization in order to draw attention to the internal conflicts and contradictions embedded within the composition. The main theme of Manchurian Fantasy is interpreted as symbolizing the founding of Manchukuo, whereas the simultaneously presented subsidiary theme can be read as a metaphorical reflection on the actual nature of the state’s establishment. Earlier studies have further speculated that Korean melodic materials were extensively employed throughout the first through third movements of the work. Considered in this light, Ahn may be understood as a colonial-subject musician who harbored complex inner tensions between career advancement and survival, artistic aspiration and national identity. Rather than being regarded merely as evidence of Ahn’s collaborationist conduct, Manchurian Fantasy should be understood as a case that exposes the dilemmas and constrained choices faced by artists within the hierarchical power structure of empire and colony. By moving beyond binary evaluations of Ahn Eaktai, this study thus proposes an alternative perspective that shifts the focus from binary judgments toward an exploration of the individual’s inner landscape as expressed through music under the conditions of its time.
