Abstract

In 1941, music festivals commemorating the 150th anniversary of Mozart’s death were held not only in his homeland of Austria but also in Germany, France, Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Poland. These countries except Germany were all occupied by Nazi Germany. The Mozart festivals mostly hosted by Nazi Germany were heavily propagandistic in nature, intertwined with the political circumstances of World War II. The Third Reich provided substantial funding to support the Mozart festivals and dispatched world-class German conductors and performers. This paper, focusing on the Mozart festivals held in Austria and France, examines the political background behind Nazi Germany’s attempt to co-opt Mozart as a ‘German composer,’ despite the presence of canonic German composers like Beethoven and Wagner. It also notes that the ‘Mozart Festival’ held immediately after the invasion of the Soviet Union featured ‘light’ works like serenades, divertimenti, and dance music—works closer to Unterhaltungsmusik with bright and cheerful character. Mozart’s music served as a means of escapism, allowing people to forget the fear and devastation of war.
