Abstract
This study aims to re-examine the confusion between two identities held by arts instructor—the identity as an artist and as an arts educator—and to explore how the application of social art can lead to a shift in their perception and con- tribute to discussions on artistic identity. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with arts instructors in the field of dance. The interviews revealed the realities of their identity struggles and the contributing factors, while also compar- ing the goals of arts education with those of social art to determine whether the participants could ultimately embrace this as part of their artistic identity. The results showed that participants recognized a strong connection between arts edu- cation and social art, in terms of forming relationships through art with diverse social groups and promoting the influence and impact of art and they expressed positive views on the concept of “arts education as social art”. In particular, the shift in perception that goes beyond the dichotomous distinction between artist and arts educator—recognizing arts education itself as another form of art—has developed into a critical awareness of the lack of diversity in types of artistic activities acknowledged in Korean society. This awareness also connected to the issue of artistic activity certification in Korea, where educational activities are of- ten excluded. Consequently, participants expressed agreement on the need for the wider dissemination of social art.
