Abstract

This study seeks to identify, from a semiological perspective, the factors that lead humans toform place attachments and to accord special meanings and identities to places. Since placeis deeply related with the working of meaning in human consciousness, the semiologicalanalysis thereof is an essential process when attaching place-meaning to spaces. To furtherexplain the concept of place attachment, it is classified into place identity, place dependency,and place rootedness. These elements, which may form an integral part of a person’s life, canbe applied to the path in which objects of meaning are created, handled by semiology, as wellas to the process of materialization of such objects, so as to define the factors that contributeto the formation of place attachments. A metonym is used as a means of converting a placeattachment from a physical object to a meaningful object in a person’s consciousness. Thisstudy attempts to shed light on the correlation between place attachments and metonyms,by selecting the metonym as the strongest semiological object from among the means thatcan be combined with place when signs form a meaning, as the subject of the study. Thesemiological function and power of the metonym provide the cause of the formation of placeattachment, which has a deep correlation with survival power and continuity of place. Thus, ananalysis of the factors contributing to the formation of a place attachment and a study of placein the application of metonym are essential factors in the creation of new places. There are twodirections in which a metonym can be applied to place attachment, i.e. a cognitive metonymfocusing on historical and social events, and an abstract metonym focusing on physical objectscreated by human imaginativeness. This study can be said to have significance as an attemptto accord new value to the concept of place in communicating with humanistic elements likehuman sentiments or symbols, which will be the subject of future studies.
