본 연구는 강원도 삼척을 가로지르는 오십천 유역의 지리경관 특성을 분석하고, 이를 통해 형성되는 장소성 고찰 을 목적으로 한다. 삼척 오십천은 감입곡류하천의 특성을 보이며, 주변에 수많은 하안단구가 발달해 있다. 또한 다양한 카 르스트 지형과 풍화 미지형도 발달한 삼척 오십천 유역은 지형학적 다양성에 기반한 장소성을 지녔으며, 이러한 장소성은 삼척 도시 형성과 경관 정체성에 중요한 역할을 해왔다. 동시에 산업화, 유로 변경, 석탄 산업의 기억 등 사회적⋅역사적 경험이 공간에 축적되며, 지역 주민들의 정체성과 정서적 동일시에 영향을 주었다. 또한 ‘쉰음산’, ‘쉰우금’ 등 지명에 나 타나는 언어적 상징은 장소성 형성에 기여하는 중요한 요소로 작용한다. 따라서 삼척 오십천은 지형, 역사, 언어, 정서가 중첩되어 지속적으로 재구성되는 동적인 장소성의 전형을 보여준다. 본 연구는 지리경관을 장소성 구성의 핵심 개념으로 제안하며, 향후 지역 공간정책 수립에 유의미한 이론적⋅실천적 시사점을 제공한다.
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the geographical landscape characteristics of the Osipcheon River basin, which traverses Samcheok in Gangwon Province, and to examine how these landscapes contribute to the formation of place identity. The Osipcheon River exhibits the features of an incised meandering stream, accompanied by numerous well-developed river terraces. The basin also contains a variety of karst landforms and weathering micro-landforms, endowing the region with a place identity rooted in geomorphological diversity. This geomorphological foundation has played a crucial role in shaping both the urban structure and the landscape identity of Samcheok. At the same time, layers of social and historical experiences—such as industrialization, river course modification, and the legacy of coal mining—have accumulated in the landscape, influencing the residents’ sense of identity and emotional attachment to place. In addition, place names such as “Swin-umsan” and “Swin-ugum” serve as symbolic expressions rooted in local language and cultural memory, contributing significantly to the construction of place identity. Accordingly, the Osipcheon River represents a dynamic manifestation of place identity, continuously reconstituted through the intersection of terrain, history, language, and emotion. This study proposes geographical landscape as a key framework for understanding place identity and offers both theoretical insights and practical implications for future regional spatial policy.
