Abstract

Soryu(小流) Shim Seong-ji(沈誠之, 1831~1904) endeavored to overcome the challenges of the modern transition period—characterized by the introduction of modern civilization and intensifying political, economic, and military oppression by Japanese imperialism—in his own way while maintaining his position as a Confucian scholar. In particular, despite his advanced age of 66, his leadership in the righteous army activities of 1896 is historically praised as a patriotic act to overcome the national crisis. Although he learned under Jeongjae(定齋) Ryu Chi-myeong(柳致明), the master of the 19th-century Toegye School, it is highly unusual that he adhered to the position of the Seo-in(西人, Western faction) in the Cheongsong region, which was dominated by the Nam-in(南人, Southern faction). This was not merely his independent path; the origin can be traced back to his 6th-generation ancestor, Shim Heul(沈釳), who participated as a local Confucian scholar in the founding of Byeongam Seowon(屛巖書院), which enshrined Yi I(李珥) and Kim Jang-saeng(金長生). In terms of academic trends, he followed Song Si-yeol(宋時烈)'s views on the Great Learning (大學), as expressed in Song's reply to Jeong Chan-hwi, and accepted Kim Jang-saeng's theory of Sohwa(小華, Small China). Furthermore, regarding the mourning system, he followed the theory of Song Byeong-seon(宋秉璿), a scholar of the Seo-in faction, which advocates wearing mourning garments for seven months in the case of a minor's death (Jung-sang, 中殤). As evidenced by his visit to Song Si-yeol’s head house with his clan uncle and his pilgrimage to Hwayangdong Seowon(華陽洞書院), which enshrined Song Si-yeol, his family tradition possessed a consciousness that sought to understand the Seo-in faction rather than the exclusive tendency toward them often seen in other families or figures in the Cheongsong region. Shim Seong-ji’s ability to secure his position in the Nam-in-dominated Cheongsong region was the result of his active pursuit of coexistence, transcending party colors and factions, rather than merely responding to the Toegye School's criticism of the Seo-in faction.
