Abstract
This paper reexamines the life and thoughts of Jeon Tae-il, who recognized the contradictions of Korean capitalism in the 1970s and resisted them, as a ‘laborer-intellectual’ and ‘(independent) researcher’, and explores how his thoughts and practices were fictionally reproduced in contemporary literature—especially Hwang Sok-yong’s ‘Strange Land (Gaekji)’ and Cho Sehee’s ‘The dwarf’. Jeon Tae-il was not simply a ‘passionate young worker’ or a ‘morally pure resister’, but a subject of knowledge and understanding who observed and analyzed labor issues and the reality of capitalism, studied the Labor Standards Act, and investigated and recorded labor conditions. His life demonstrated the possibility of resistance through knowledge against the inhumane labor environment of the capitalist era, and became a place of practice for pursuing autonomous knowledge through study groups such as ‘Fools’ Association.’ This aspect of Jeon Tae-il as a researcher was transformed into the figure of a ‘laborer-intellectual’ in literature. Dong-hyeok in ‘Strange Land (Gaekji)’ is a figure who crosses the boundary between intellectuals and laborers, and is a new example of laborer intellect that can be established on the intellectual assets that Jeon Tae-il built. Meanwhile, in ‘The dwarf’, the structure of conflict between laborers and capitalists is reproduced as a moral confrontation that reflects Jeon Tae-il’s memoir, and at the same time, the process by which the successors of capital understand the reality of laborers is described. In this way, this paper specifically examines how critical awareness of capitalism and the flow of knowledge are literary transferred and reconstructed through the laborer-intellectual Jeon Tae-il.
