Abstract

Despite significant progress in neuroscience, the mechanisms linking brain activity to consciousness remain unresolved. The theory of Localization, which attributes specific conscious functions to distinct brain regions, is still debated, and current explanations of how neuronal activity translates into subjective experience remain outdated. In contrast to religions centered on belief in a transcendent deity, Buddhism offers a systematic exploration of mind (心), intention (意), and consciousness (識). Drawing on this tradition, Kim Sung-chul critiques the scientific assumption of a subject-object dichotomy and introduces the concept of the ″Stream of One-Point Consciousness,″ which posits that subject and object are intrinsically inseparable. While this idea does not encompass all of Buddhist consciousness theory, nor replaces scientific models, it provides an alternative perspective grounded in meditative practice. Because meditation allows for repeatable, universal experiences, it bears methodological similarities to scientific experimentation. Thus, Buddhist approaches to consciousness not only align with scientific methods in some respects but may also contribute novel insights into understanding the mind.
