Abstract
This article outlines the developmental patterns and the underlying zeitgeist (spirit of the times) of student movements in the Gyeongbuk region from the 1930s—the period of harshest oppression during Japanese colonial rule—up to the moments immediately preceding liberation. Despite the dark era characterized by the wartime mobilization regime and the policy of ethnic annihilation, student movements in the Gyeongbuk region continued without interruption, evolving into four distinct types based on the period and method of activity. First, the early 1930s saw the ‘Secret Society and Ideological Struggle Type,’ where students studied socialist ideologies and sought class liberation in conjunction with labor and peasant movements. Second, as the Japanese policy of imperial subjectification intensified, the ‘Promotion of National Consciousness and Cultural Resistance Type’ emerged. This involved a spiritual struggle to protect Hangul and history while exposing the falsehood of ‘Naisen Ittai(the slogan that Japan and Korea are one)’. Third, immediately prior to Japan's defeat, the movement shifted to the ‘Armed Uprising and Connection with the Provisional Government Type,’ which established concrete military operations, planned the destruction of government offices, and attempted to link up with the Korean Provisional Government. Fourth, entering the 1940s, the movement evolved beyond simple resistance into the ‘Preparation for Nation-Building and Cultivation of Governance Capability Type.’ Students operated organizations modeled after government ministries to prepare for state administration post-liberation and fostered professional expertise. The zeitgeist of the Gyeongbuk student movement identified through these activities is defined by a ‘Will for Nation-Building based on a Level- Headed Perception of Reality’ and an ‘Elite Sense of Responsibility Willing to Endure Sacrifice.’ Students at the time scientifically analyzed the global situation through means such as shortwave radio broadcasts to predict Japan's defeat. They demonstrated an autonomous and future-oriented attitude, renouncing their guaranteed privileges to dedicate themselves to the independence and founding of their motherland.
