도미니카공화국의 국가정체성 형성과 흑인의 배제: 마누엘 데 헤수스 갈반의『엔리키요』를 중심으로

마누엘 데 헤수스 갈반의『엔리키요』는 출간된 지 130년이 지났지만, 인종적 측면에서 도미니카 국민의 자기인식에 결정적 영향을 미치면서 아직도 도미니카공화국 문학에서 정전의 위치를 차지하고 있다. 19세기 도미니카공화국의 엘리트들은 당대에 유행했던 낭만주의 문학을 추구했고, 국가 정체성을 모색하면서 자신들의 눈을 에스파뇰라 섬의 과거로 돌렸다. 하지만 그들은 대부분이 흑인이거나 물라토들이 차지하고 있던 신흥국가에서 자신들이 찾던 원형을 발견할 수 없었다. 그러자 그 섬이 에스파뇰라라고 불리던 시기로 돌아갔고, 거기서 인종적 패러다임을 해체하고 재구성할 수 있는 상징인 엔리키요를 찾아냈다. 이렇게 도미니카의 권력담론은 흑인 혹은 물라토를 완전히 배제하면서, 도미니마공화국이 동질적 인종으로 이루어졌다는 신기루를 창조한다. 갈반은 도미니카공화국 역사를 낭만적으로서술하면서, 식민지 주민들을 마지막 타이노 족장의 후손들, 즉 스페인 사람들의 비인간적인 잔인함과 탐욕에 맞서 싸운 사람의 후손으로 제시한다. 본 글은 도미니카공화국 역사의‘백인화’뒤에는 아프리카인들의 현실이 있지만, 갈반이 어떻게『엔리키요』를 통해 도미니카 인들에게 에스파뇰라 섬에 단지 백인과 원주민과 혼혈인만이 존재한다고 믿게 하면서 자신들을 엔리키요의 후손으로 동일시하게 되었는지를 밝히고자 한다.
Abstract
It is well known that in the development of a Dominican national identity, Domincan elites combined race, nation, and religion, shaping a national identity that defined Dominicans as white, Catholic, and culturally Hispanic, in contrast to Haitians, characterized as being black and culturally African. Manuel de Jesús Galván’s novel Enriquillo which was published in its entirety in 1882 gave the long-term impact to this anti-black sentiment. Enriquillo has remained popular in the Dominican Republic well into the twentyfirst century and its appeal is due in part to the fact that Galvan builds up a national legend and interwines true historical figures with fictional characters. Even though the Amerindian population of Hispaniola was almost exterminated in mid-sixteenth century, the Dominican writer portrayed the Dominican people as the descendants of the brave indians and the Spanish colonists, without mentioning the African presence. Because of this foundation novel, constructed by deformation and ellipsis of historical data, the Dominican elites could fill the gap of post-independece history and project an ideal future of Negrophobia in the ethno-racial construction of the Dominican nation. In this sense, Galván’s novel suggests the necessary connection between fiction and history in the formation of national identity.
