초록

La escalera para Electra (Stairway for Electra, 1970), the representative work of the writer Aída Cartagena Portalatín, is an experimental novel that examines the national identity of the Dominican Republic which has lasted for centuries. The project of this work is to reveal its falseness and claim the necessity of modifying it to draw up a new national identity. This article focuses on the main themes of this work –feminine subjectivity, national identity and the rewriting of history– and explores the spatial and temporal dimensions of this work, the relationship between the intertextuality and the national identity, the destruction of traditional women’s images, the critique of patriarchy and the similarities between Greek drama and the sociocultural situations of Dominican Republic. Through the analysis of these elements, this article intends to show that the new identity of the Dominican Republic that she pursues is based on the super-syncretism of the Caribbean.
