Abstract
The statue of the Commander in Molière’s Dom Juan and Mozart’s Don Giovanni serves as a pivotal factor for the critical understanding of the works, and its stage realization demands a representational approach that sustains dramatic tension without compromising its inherent meaning. This paper analyzes the aesthetic meaning generated by the modes of representation for the statue in Daniel Mesguich's production of <Dom Juan> and David Marton's production of <Don Giovanni>. These two productions render the statue of the Commander, a supernatural being, present through sound alone, while simultaneously enabling the supernatural event to be contemplated within a new structure by introducing objects symbolizing interiority in the space opened by its absence. This transformation reconfigures the meaning of the supernatural into an ethical consequence that operates within the relationship between desire and memory. The absence of the statue of the Commander not only overcomes the limitations of representation but also opens the potentiality for the return of the deceased to manifest through diverse forms. In both productions, the supernatural is not fixed to a specific form but is omnipresent within diverse strata, including events and spaces, fiction and reality. In this way, the relationship between reality and the supernatural is reconstructed, consequently providing an aesthetic framework through which the supernatural can be re-contemplated within a contemporary sensibility. This holds contemporary significance in that it expands the original meaning of the work and consolidates its performative value.
