Abbott Laboratories, a blockbuster drug producing firm was analyzed through a case study. The impact of the expiration of intellectual property rights in the pharmaceutical industry was examined. According to the case analysis, generic drugs were ready to be released when patents for original drugs expire, threatening original drugs’ profitability. When the valid patent period for the original drug ends, the emergence of generic drugs in the market would be a threat to the competitiveness of firms. This study analyzed the overall trend of pharmaceutical industry of original drugs and generic drugs. Through this case analysis, it showed that the issues faced by a particular firm could also be applied to other firms.
