국문초록20세기 들어 미국에서 대두되기 시작한 실용주의의 진보주의 교육의 영향으로 체육은 기존의 단편적인 체육의 범위를 벗어나 보다 광범위한 교육과정의 중요한 수단으로 간주되었으며 체육의 가치를 새로운 시각에서 인정하게 되었다. 즉 실용주의 사상에서는 어떠한 단순한 지식추구보다는 행위를 통한 경험에 보다 큰 가치를 부여하고 있으며 그것의 체육사상에 따르면 인간은 몸과 마음의 전체적이고 통일적인 유기적 상호관계가 유지된다. 그러므로 체육활동을 통해 physical fitness 뿐만 아니라 개인의 정서적, 사회적 성격을 향상시키며 특히 모든 종류의 운동에서 창조적인 활동과 경험이 강조된다.결국 실용주의의 틀 안에서 체육의 목적, 가치 등이 새롭게 해석되었으며 체육의 범주가 인간의 정서적, 지적 영역까지를 포함하며 더 나아가 체육활동과 사회 및 인생의 범위까지 확대시켜 관련지었다. 즉 실용주의사상 안에서의 체육활동은 다양한 형태의 광범위한 경험을 제공하며 그러한 경험을 바탕으로 체육활동이 인간의 사회성, 민주성의 획득을 위한 중요한 수단이 된다. 여기서 듀이는 경험론과 도구주의를 통하여 체육활동의 중요성을 인간의 사회적 본성과 관련지어 그 가치를 인정하였다.
Abstract
A Study of Physical Education in Pragmatism: based on John Dewey's View Lee, Jeong-Hak(Sangmyung University) This study directed toward recontextualizing the theory of physical education understanding progressive educational aims in the context of programatic theory. Pragmatism is a method of inquiry rather than a theoretical orientation. It is a method for describing conduct rather than for describing knowledge. In the pragmatic concept of physical activity creative activities and experiences as well as all types of sports are highly valued because through these activities the person not only learns by doing but also gains a measure of self-control and discipline and learns to cooperate with others. The pragmatic program contributes to the social education movement through providing opportunities for the development of such social and personal qualities as ethical character, cooperation, honesty and friendliness.
