Abstract
Eleven geography instructional materials in support of student-centered and active learning were developed. The materials were designed for students to learn a variety of geographic topics (e.g., crime, community development, a rural problem) by dealing with authentic activities and participating in problem solving situations. The materials were presented during in-service training workshops for secondary geography teachers in 2012. In two years after their introduction, a survey was conducted to investigate the use of the materials and their effects on changes in geography classrooms. The results showed that on average the teachers (N=50) used 4.48 materials in the last two years. This high rate of adoption illustrates that geography materials emphasizing active learning and authenticity of tasks, if they enabling different types of learning experiences effectively, can be used successfully in secondary geography classrooms. Data collected from teacher observations showed that student interest, engagement, and involvement in the learning process were increased while using the materials. In addition, the use of the materials provided the teachers opportunities to reflect their current teaching and to appreciate student-centered approaches to teaching strategies. Lastly, fellow teachers and school administrators showed mixed responses, ranging from complete and outspoken support down to implicit opposition and indifference.
