홍문동교회의 설립과 분열에 관한 연구: 1902년 징계사건을 중심으로

홍문동교회는 곤당골교회 교인들 사이의 신분적인 갈등으로 인해 1895년 5월 이후에 홍문동 지역에서 양반교인들을 중심으로 시작된 교회다. 그 후 1897년 12월에는 정식으로 교회당을 마련하고 1898년 10월에는 미국 북장로교 서울 선교지부의 관할을 받는 교회가 되었으며, 제직회를 구성하는 등 당시 서울내의 중요한 장로교회 중 하나로 발전했다. 그리고 1899년 초 곤당골교회와 재결합하기도 했다. 그러나 1899년 말부터 한국인들만의 독립교회를 설립하려는 움직임이 있었고 이에 대해 1902년 2월에 대한예수교장로회공의회 산하 서울공의회위원회는 17명의 교인들을 출교(黜敎)하는 징계 결정을 했다. 징계 결정의 중요한 요인으로 선교사들의 관할로부터 벗어나서 독립교회를 세우려고 한 것과 교회당 구입과 관련한 자금 문제에 대한 선교사들의 의구심 등이었다. 이 징계 결정으로 홍문동교회는 분열되어 선교사들을 중심으로 한 교인들은 제중원에서 모였고, 출교당한 사람들은 기존의 교회당에서 모였다. 그러나 징계를 받은 교인들이 잘못을 공개적으로 고백하고 다시 합류하기를 원했고 선교사들은 이들을 받아줌으로써 징계사건은 마무리 되었다. 이후로 교회명칭을 홍문동교회 대신 제중원이 있는 지역 이름을 따라 구리개, 동현(銅峴)예배당이나 중앙교회 등으로 사용했지만 기존에 알려진 것처럼 홍문동교회가 완전히 해산되어 없어진 것은 아니다. 또한 징계를 받았던 교인들 중에는 박중근․정윤수․유흥열 등과 같이 오래지 않아 복권되어서 몇 년 후에는 조사․장로 등으로 활동하면서 교회에 공헌한 사람들이 있었음을 알 수 있다.
Abstract
In May 1895, the Hongmun-dong Presbyterian Church was created by the Yangban believers in Hongmun-dong due to conflicts over social classes among the congregation members at the Kondangkol Presbyterian Church. In December 1897, they built their own chapel. In October 1898, they were put under the supervision of the Seoul Mission Station of the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A. and formed a Jejik-hoe(the extended board of deacons) to develop their church into one of the major Presbyterian churches of Seoul in those days. In early 1899, the church was reunited with the Kondangkol Presbyterian Church. There was, however, a movement to establish an independent church for only Korean people since late 1899. In February 1902, the Seoul Committee of Councils, under the Council of Presbyterian Missions in Korea, made a disciplinary decision to excommunicate 17 believers. This disciplinary decision was mainly driven by the believers' attempt at building an independent church outside the supervision of the missionaries, and the suspicion that the believers had funds to purchase a chapel. This disciplinary decision led to the breakup of the Hongmun-dong Presbyterian Church. The congregation, led by the missionaries, would gather at Jejungwon, and the excommunicated believers would gather at the old chapel. The believers that were disciplined, however, wished to join the congregation again after making a public confession about their wrongdoing. The missionaries took them back, which led to the settlement of the disciplinary case. Since then, the old name of the church, Hongmun-dong Presbyterian Church, was replaced with the name Gurigae or Donghyeon Church after the area in which the Jejungwon was located or Central Church. However, the Hongmun-dong Presbyterian Church was never dissolved completely as it was reported before. Of the believers that were subjected to disciplinary action, Park Jung-geun, Jeong Yun-su, and Yu Heung-yeol were reinstated soon enough and later made contributions to the church as helpers(a missionary's assistant) and elders.
