승동교회의 초기 역사에 관한 연구: 1902-1908년 시기를 중심으로

곤당골교회－홍문동교회－동현교회－승동교회로 이어지는 승동교회의 초기 역사에서 동현교회 시기는 분규와 징계 사건으로 인하여 구리개 제중원으로 옮겨와서 3년 5개월 동안 지낸 시기였다. 동현교회를 담임한 목회자는 밀러, 레이놀즈, 클라크 등이다. 그 중에 미국 남장로회 소속의 레이놀즈가 1903년 초부터 1905년 4월까지 교회를 담임하고, 미국 북장로회 소속의 클라크가 동역한 일은 연합사역의 좋은 사례라고 할 수 있다. 동현교회를 재정비하기 위해서 서울선교지부는 동현교회·새문안교회·연동교회가 함께하는 행사를 많이 진행했다. 1902년 3월에 시작한 주일 오후 연합예배, 3개월에 한 번씩 열린 연합 성찬예배와 세례식, 1902년 3월에 열린 서울지역 최초의 연합 여성 사경회, 정기적인 주중 예배 및 매일 기도회 등은 동현교회의 분위기를 쇄신하고, 서울지역의 장로교회가 성장하는 데 긍정적인 역할을 했다. 이 시기에 전도부인으로 활동한 다동(茶洞)의 김 부인은 승동교회의 초기 역사에서 반드시 기억해야 할 지도자다. 1905년 8월 1일에 승동으로 이전한 동현교회는 지명을 따라 승동(承洞)교회로 부르게 되었는데, 1908년 말 이후에는 승동(勝洞)교회라는 이름을 사용했다. 승동교회는 권서를 임명하여 양반들이 많이 사는 북촌지역 전도를 시도했는데, 그 결과 1908년 8월에 안동교회를 설립했다. 그리고 같은 해에 백정 출신인 박성춘 대신에 이여한을 초대 장로로 선출했다. 승동교회는 이런 과정을 통하여 곤당골교회부터 이어져 온 백정교회의 이미지를 벗어나고자 했다.
Abstract
In the early history of Seungdong Church from Gondanggol Church through Hongmundong Church and Donghyeon Church to Seungdong Church, the period of Donghyeon Church was marked by disputes and disciplinary actions and lasted for three years and five months in Gurigae Jejungwon after its move. The ministers that were in charge of Donghyeon Church were Miller, Reynolds, and Clark. Of them, Reynolds, who belonged to the Southern Presbyterian Church in America, led the church between early 1903 and April, 1905. He was followed by Clark who belonged to the North Presbyterian Church in America. They were good examples of a united ministry. Trying to contribute to the realignment of Donghyeon Church, the Seoul Mission Station carried out several events to put together Donghyeon Church, Saemunan Church, and Yeondong Church. These events included collective services during the weekend that began in March, 1902, the united Sacrament service, and baptism every three months, Seoul’s first Bible study for women was held in March, 1902 along with regular weekday services and daily prayer services. These events had positive effects in freshening up the atmosphere of Donghyeon Church and increasing the Presbyterian Church in the Seoul area. Lady Kim of Dadong(Dabanggol), who was active as an Bible women during those days, is one of the leaders who must be remembered in the early history of Seungdong Church. Donghyeon Church moved to Seungdong on August 1, 1905 and was renamed Seungdong(承洞) Church due to its new location. They used the new name, Seungdong(勝洞) Church, beginning from late 1908. Seungdong Church appointed a group of colporteurs and attempted to do missionary work in the Bukchon area where many Yangban families resided, setting up Andong Church in August, 1908. In the same year, they elected Lee Yeo-han as its first elder instead of Park Seong-chun who was a butcher. In this process, Seungdong Church tried to shake off its old image as a church of butchers that lingered on since the period of Gondanggol Church.
