Abstract

This study examines how regional magazines functioning as local content platforms use visual communication strategies to shape and convey local identity and emotional resonance. Local identity is understood not merely as geographical information or physical space, but as a socially constructed concept formed through the interaction of a region’s history, culture, symbols, and shared emotions. Contemporary regional magazines make this identity sensorially experienceable through visual elements such as images, color, typography, and layout. As case studies, this research analyzes d design travel from Japan and the place from Taiwan, both published on a city-by-city basis and characterized by independent regional perspectives and content strategies. A total of six recent issues—three from each magazine—were selected for qualitative analysis, focusing on cover design, table-of-contents structure, editorial layout, typography, image usage, and color strategies to clarify how locality is visualized and how communication with readers is structured. The findings indicate that d design travel, grounded in design research, systematically archives local sense of place and regional brands, building a consistent visual identity through a restrained visual language and functional editorial strategy. In contrast, the place employs emotional narratives and artistic imagery to elicit affective resonance, and uses flexible page composition and varied layouts to provide an immersive reading experience. Both magazines, through distinct visual strategies, deliver a dual message of ‘understanding’ and ‘experiencing’ the local. This study thus derives visual communication strategies that regional magazines, as local content–based platforms, can employ and offers practical design implications for future regional magazine planning and design.
