본 연구는 ‘상호매체성'의 관점을 취하여 ‘문학적 음악’(literary music)이라고 일컬어져 온 슈만의 음악에서 슈만이 어떤 점을 문학으로부터 취해왔고, 그것을 어떻게 음악만이 지닌 매체적 특징으로 담아내었는지를 《크라이슬레리아나》 Op. 16을 통해 설명한다. 우선 슈만의 기악음악에서 드러나는 ‘상호매체성’의 특징들을 찾아내기 위하여, 문학과 음악에서 공통적으로 사용되나 매체적 특수성에 대한 구별 없이 사용되어 온 “내러티브”, “다성성”, “캐릭터” 등의 개념들이 매체에 따라 어떻게 다르게 적용되는지를 점검한다. 이러한 쟁점들에 대한 논의 후 슈만의 작품 《크라이슬레리아나》에서 음악적으로 구현되는 내러티브의 특징, 내러티브 구조에서 나타나는 문학에서 영향받은 다성성, 내러티브의 구조적 특징 외 다양한 차원의 소리로 구현되는 다성성, 그리고 이러한 다성성을 구성해내는 핵심 단위로서의 캐릭터가 음악적으로 구축되는 방식에 대하여 논한다. 이를 통해 음악작품에 대하여 분석적으로 접근하는 것을 넘어서 타 매체와의 연관성 속에서 음악을 살펴봄으로써 슈만 음악이 지닌 문학성, 슈만이 음악을 통해 강화한 함축성을 확인해 본다.
Abstract
This study examines Robert Schumann’s ‘literary music,’ analyzing it from a perspective of intermediality. Specifically, I examine how features from E. T. A. Hoffmann’s literary works, “Kreisleriana” (I, II) in Fanstasiestücke in Callot’s Mannier, and Lebensansichten des Katers Murr, were referenced, mediated, and transformed through Schumann’s musical Kreisleriana. To identify the characteristics of intermedial transformation in Schumann's instrumental music, I examine how each of three concepts - “narrative,” “polyphony,” and “character” - are applied differently across each medium. After discussing these issues, the characteristics of the ‘musical’ narrative embodied in Kreisleriana are elaborated: polyphony in narrative structure, polyphony that is realized through various sonic dimensions, characteristics and role of various voices, and musical characterization of a character. Based on this critical examination of how music connects with other media, I present conclusions concerning how literary qualities of Hoffmann’s works were implicitly and differently reflected in Schumann’s Kreisleriana.
